Can burning charcoal be green?

published by Abby on 29/06/2010 05:48 PM

Charcoal is mostly carbon so when burnt it adds CO2 to the atmosphere.

Over 90% of the charcoal we burn on barbecues in the UK comes from non-UK forests, many of which are not replaced when cut down. Buying charcoal from sustainable British woodlands means that trees are either coppiced (so re-grow) or are replaced with new planting. In either case CO2 is reabsorbed and that is what makes it ‘sustainable.’ The charcoal on the Christchurch barbecue came from the Commons Nature Reserve in WGC, so no transport pollution either.
