What is podcasting?

Podcasting is a way to 'subscribe' to audio recordings and have them delivered to your computer. The podcasts in this site are all free. As a subscriber to a podcast from Christchurch Baptist you can automatically receive the latest published recording, whether it is a sermon or another recorded event. This file can then be easily transferred to an mp3 player or played on your computer. To do this you will need an internet connection and a piece of podcast software which is usually available free of charge. This software can check the Christchurch website for new recordings and automatically download them to your player.

How do I get my podcasting software to download the recordings?

Once you have the software, choose the channel you would like to subscribe to, by clicking on the channel link in the podcasting box on the front page of our website. A channel is a collection of recordings on the same theme, or in the same series.

To "subscribe" to the channel you copy the address of the podcast "feed" from the relevant page and add it to your podcast application.
To do this in Internet Explorer, right click on the RSS PODCAST icon and click "Copy Shortcut".
To do this in Mozilla Firefox, right click on the RSS PODCAST icon and click "Copy Link Location".

When a new recording for your subscriptions becomes available your software will automatically download it. On completion you can listen to the mp3 on your pc or transfer it to your portable player to listen to later.

The software will automatically download any subsequent recordings as soon as they are available.

What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.
With a piece of software called a news reader, you can subscribe to news "feeds" and the software will show you a list of headlines and summary paragraphs from your subscribed feeds.
Podcasting it therefore an amalgamation of RSS, MP3s and a piece of software to handle downloading files from feed onto your computer, and optionally uploading the to your MP3 player automatically.
